In the region of Andalucia in southern Spain, near the Cadiz province, you will find two charming villages known as Conil de la Frontera and Jerez de la Frontera. These towns, referred to as "frontiers," hold significant historical value dating back to the 13th century conflicts between the Christian territory and the Emirate of Granada. Apart from their rich history, these places hold a special place in my heart as they were the most memorable destinations during my initial summer in Spain. It was not only Conil and Jerez that captured my heart, but also the man who is now my husband.

Conil de la Frontera

Today Conil is known as a perfect low-key summer destination in the southern coast. In my opinion Conil is such a beautiful village to visit because although it may not have an active night life it is does have chill vibes and great food. The houses are all painted white with vibrant flower pots on the window tops. The tall palm trees and nearby beach gave this small town a boho chic type of look.

When it comes to the food, Conil offers a variety of coastal seafood, but I highly recommend to try the "tortillitas de camarón". They are these savory and crunchy starters. It's pretty much this fried battered shrimps in the shape of a pancake.

Restaurants Recommendations:

  • Bar El Tebeito (tortillitas de camarón and cazon en adobo)

  • Mistura Conil (salmorejo, ceviche de Pargo and pad thai)

  • Bar Los Hermanos ( choco frito and ensaladilla de mariscos)

Jerez de la Frontera

The people of Jerez are incredibly passionate about three things: horses, wine, and flamenco. It is such a beautiful city with lots of recognizable love for their Spanish traditions.

During Holy Week Jerez puts together a large party called La Feria del Caballo. It is when everyone gets dressed up and go on coach buggies pulled by horses around town. It is where people gather to drink, dance, and celebrate processions. Jerez is also well known for their sherry wine. Sherry wine offers aromatic flavors that pair well with various dining options. Usually the best sherry is served on tap from large barrels inside a local tavern. If you go to Jerez I recommend you go to the Tabando El Pasaje-Vinos y Flamenco Jerez.

What I love most about this tavern is that most everyday they have some flamenco show. It is completely worth seeing the show because you really get the essence of true flamenco dancers, singers, and guitarist.

I also recommend visiting the cathedral because it has such interesting Gothic, Baroque, and Neoclassical features. It's such a beautiful sight! Plus it is so tall that it would be impossible to capture a selfie and the church behind properly.

Conil and Jerez de la Frontera are undoubtedly my favorite places to visit in the South of Spain. Visiting these places allowed me to convince myself that I could spend another year in Spain. There was so much I enjoyed and saw that summer and it was clear that I was falling in love one city at a time. I was falling even more in love with the man I was traveling with. I am not sure how it happened but I just know that it happened gradually and then all at once. I suppose the South of Spain has its charm.
